Blade Runner 2049 Director Would Like To Direct A Star Wars Film Outside Skywalker Saga

It looks like Blade Runner 2049 director Dennis Villeneuve is interested in making a Star Wars film after all, just not an installment connected to the Skywalker saga.

The filmmaker just recently spoke with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, and during their discussion the genre director confessed to being interested in making a Star Wars standalone movie, saying that Rogue One was actually a "very interesting attempt to get out of the mold" of the franchise.

"It's something that, again it's like, I would be intrigued," Villeneuve admitted. "I don't know, it's very difficult. What is dangerous with Star Wars right now is it's become its own vocabulary. I would love to see them, I think Rogue One was a very interesting attempt to get out of the mold. I think it would be a great idea to get out of there and to go on a new part of the galaxy, that I would be open to."

Villeneuve's made critically acclaimed film entries like the 2015 crime-thriller Sicario, the 2016 science fiction drama Arrival and of course the neo-noir science fiction movie Blade Runner 2049, so having him work on a Star Wars installment would certainly benefit Lucasfilm. After all, the franchise is looking to expand, planning on standalone movies for Obi-Wan Kenobi, Boba Fett, and Yoda. The studio even has another trilogy in mind after Episode IX. There's definitely a lot of room for Villeneuve.

Lucasfilm's next movie, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, is slated to release on December 15, 2017.
