Black Panther Writer Takes Over Captain America In The 4th of July

Ta-Nehisi Coates has been writing an acclaimed Black Panther comic book for the two years but he is about to enter unfamiliar territory. Coates revealed in The Atlantic that he will be writing the relaunched Captain America with veteran artist Leinil Yu providing interior work for the series, and it will launch on the Fourth of July.

Coates had a lot to say about writing the comic and why it scares him. On the aforementioned blog post, he details the origins of Steve Rogers, his role as a symbol, and how he is often depicted as "a walking emblem of greatest-generation propaganda brought to life in this splintered postmodern time."

He pulled no punches about his thoughts on the character, noting how he has mixed feelings with how Rogers represents "The Dream" and why anyone would still believe in that. Funnily enough, this is why he is excited to write for the character.

"Writing is about questions for me—not answers. And Captain America, the embodiment of a kind of Lincolnesque optimism, poses a direct question for me: Why would anyone believe in The Dream? What is exciting here is not some didactic act of putting my words in Captain America's head, but attempting to put Captain America's words in my head. What is exciting is the possibility of exploration, of avoiding the repetition of a voice I've tired of."

Unfortunately, he doesn't give any details about his plans for Steve Rogers. We're gonna have to wait for the July 2018 solicitations and considering how Marvel just released the May ones last week, fans are in for a long wait.

Captain America #1 comes out on July 4.
