Andy Serkis was introduced to the MCU way back in Age of Ultron as Ulysses Klaue, but the character eventually met his end in this year's Black Panther. As it turns out, director Ryan Coogler wasn't so keen in getting rid of Klaw, but it seemed like the only direction the movie was going.
Talking to The Toronto Sun, Coogler explained:
"I like Klaw. I was bugged by having to do that. It's tough when you have to kill characters off and I really did love that character."
Though Killmonger has gotten all the praise as one of the more compelling villains of the film, some people still look at Andy Serkis' performance with great fondness. Ten years in, and you think that Marvel Studios would have found the formula for a better antagonist earlier?
Coogler continues:
"I love Andy, he's a lovely person. But again, it's one of those things where when you've got so many people in a movie, some of them have to go. Klaw in this movie, he's just having a good time. Every scene he's in, he's walking in like it's the best day of his life. He's got a swagger to him that's interesting and for me it was cool to see Andy act like that. It was a real pleasure."
What's cool about the MCU's Klaw is, with the original character being someone made entirely of sound, Klaue in the film has a great fondness for music. Watching him sing What is Love to himself gives off the same creepy vibe as Joker clapping in the prison cell in The Dark Knight.
At least, that's what it was like to me.
