Black Panther And The Last Jedi Rake In Most Awards At This Year’s Saturn Awards

Marvel and Star Wars had a romp at this year's Saturn Awards.

Presented every year by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films, the Saturn Awards recognizes the best in genre fiction in both film and in television. This year, Marvel's Black Panther and Lucasfilm's Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

As per Variety, Black Panther won five different awards after receiving fourteen different nominations. The all-black superhero film nabbed awards like Best Comic-to-Film Motion Picture, Best Director (Ryan Coogler), Best Supporting Actress (Danai Gurira), Best Production Design (Hannah Beecher) and Best Make-Up (Joel Harlow and Ken Diaz).

Meanwhile Star Wars: The Last Jedi was also nominated for 13 awards. The sequel to the Force Awakens took home three of the awards it was nominated for, including Best Film Screenplay (Rian Johnson), Best Actor (Mark Hamill), and Best Film Editing (Bob Ducsay).

Other comic book movies also won at the Saturn Awards. Patrick Steward nabbed Best Supporting Actor for Logan, Gal Gadot won Best Actress for her work in Wonder Woman and Tom Holland won Best Performance by a Younger Actor for Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Of Course, Black Panther and The Last Jedi taking the lead at the Saturn Awards comes as no surprise. Not only was Black Panther T'Challa's (Chadwick Boseman) very first standalone movie, it was also Marvel's first all-black superhero film. That's a win for diversity right there. Meanwhile, The Last Jedi brought the Star Wars franchise to new directions. It comes as no surprise that Hamill won the Best Actor award – he gave the performance of his career in the film.
