Zombieland Double Tap: Jesse Eisenberg Blamed Deadpool for the Delay of the Sequel

Zombieland was a hit when it came out back in 2009, and a lot of people are wondering why it took Sony 10 years to come up with the sequel, Zombieland: Double Tap. During a recent interview with The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Jesse Eisenberg (Columbus) explains that a big chunk of the delay was because of Deadpool.

According to Eisenberg, the sequel to Zombieland had to be put on hold because writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick had to work on Deadpool with Tim Miller. Eisenberg says:

"We waited 10 years to do the movie—we didn't wait. We were trying to do the movie right after the first one, cause the first one was so popular, and then we just couldn't like—we just waited for the best script. In the meantime, the two writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick did ‘Deadpool' and then we were kind of waiting for them to finish that, so they can write this… we're all waiting for the best script."

Besides two Deadpool films, Wernick and Reese also ended up working on Life starring Ryan Reynolds as well as G.I. Joe Retaliation (not in that particular order). Director Ruben Fleischer also ended up working on another comic book property, Venom.

Though I'm excited about the return to Zombieland, I'm kind of hoping it doesn't botch the perfect film that we got back in 2009. I thought it was a great, self-contained story, and I'm hoping Double Tap hasn't come too late.

Catch Zombieland: Double Tap when it hits theaters Oct. 18.
