Zendaya on Possibly Playing Ariel for the Live-Action Little Mermaid

There has been a rumor that came out recently that Disney was courting Zendaya to star in their live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, and Variety was able to update the actress on where she stands with the role.

Check it out:

Zendaya confirms that the news about her taking over Ariel was just a rumor, but when asked if she would play the part, she replies with, "Why wouldn't I?"

It's said that the move to hire Zendaya in the role is supposed to be Disney's attempt at having more diverse actors and actresses in the lead roles of their films. Interestingly enough, if Zendaya does land Ariel, this would be the second character she took over that was originally a redhead in the comics—the first being MJ in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Though nothing has been confirmed, it seems that Zendaya would be the perfect choice to take over for Ariel. She's a booming star right now, and her name is sure to draw audiences to the cinemas. Not to mention she's already proven that she has a great set of pipes.

The Little Mermaid is set to be directed by Rob Marshall, who was also at the helm of this December's upcoming Mary Poppins Returns. The movie also promises to have new songs from original writer Alan Meken as well as Moana songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda.

No release date has been set for the live-action The Little Mermaid.
