Patty Jenkins is probably best known now for her work on Wonder Woman, but before that, she was actually set to helm the second Thor movie for Marvel. Jenkins had left the project due to creative differences, and she elaborates on what went wrong behind the scenes.
Talking to Vanity Fair, Jenkins explains:
"I did not believe that I could make a good movie out of the script that they were planning on doing. I think it would have been a huge deal—it would have looked like it was my fault. It would've looked like, ‘Oh my God, this woman directed it and she missed all these things.'"
It was said that Jenkins had wanted to add more character to Jane Foster's arc, making it a kind of Romeo and Juliet-inspired story, but Marvel apparently wanted something with more action. The result was one of the most critically panned Marvel films with Jane Foster being one of the most boring lead heroines in the MCU.
If anything, Jenkins is pretty grateful that she left, because if she didn't, she probably wouldn't have been able to take on Wonder Woman. Jenkins continues, "You can't do movies you don't believe in. The only reason to do it would be to prove to people that I could. But it wouldn't have proved anything if I didn't succeed. I don't think that I would have gotten another chance. And so, I'm super grateful."
For now, Jenkins is probably at the height of her success, what with Wonder Woman having status as the first ‘good' DCEU film. A lot of people are excited about the sequel, but thanks to the Coronavirus, we'll have to wait a bit longer to catch it in theaters.
Wonder Woman 1984 is set to release on Aug. 14.
