Spider-Man: Far from Home had just surpassed the $1 billion-dollar wall, making it the highest earning Spider-Man film of all time. Besides the bragging rights, this actually means a lot, especially when it comes to Spider-Man staying in the MCU.
Earlier this month, it was said that Marvel Studios and Sony had a condition in which Spider-Man: Far from Home had to earn a billion at the box office or else full creative rights for the character will revert back to Sony. We don't have any idea how true this condition was, but the good news is, with the movie already passing that number, we could look forward to more of Tom Holland's Peter Parker in the MCU.
If anything, letting Marvel handle Spider-Man was probably the best thing Sony ever did for the character. Tom Holland is the perfect web-head, and he's considered to be one of the most comic-accurate Spider-Men compared to Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
When it comes to Sony's solo work on the franchise, it seems that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was their only hit. I mean, Venom still made a lot of money in the box office, but it was a critical bomb, and even director Ruben Fleischer doesn't seem keen on coming back for the sequel. For now, Sony is still scrambling to get the Venom sequel made, and they're currently in production for another Spider-Man spinoff, Morbius: The Living Vampire starring Jared Leto.
