Genndy Tartakovsky is an animator best known for his work on Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, and the original Star Wars: Clone Wars, and though he’s been making more family-friendly fare with the Hotel Transylvania films, Adult Swim has just dropped a trailer for his next series, Primal.
No description has been released about the show, but by the looks of it, we’re going to going to a land before time when dinosaurs and ancient animals walked the Earth. We don’t really get any word from the protagonist, but if you’ve watched Samurai Jack, you know Tartakovsky can make whole episodes with a character that doesn’t say a word, and it would still be compelling.
Admittedly, the show looks a lot more layered than Tartakovsky’s previous work, but that animation and character design harken back to his signature style. I have to say though, I think Tartakovsky’s style really works for 2D animation. When you watch his 3D films like Hotel Transylvania, you’ll even see a lot of elements that would have worked better in 2D—but that’s just my opinion.
No release date has been set for Primal, but with the trailer out now, we could be looking at a release sometime later this year. Besides this show, I’m sure a lot of other Adult Swim fans will be looking forward to the return of Rick and Morty which is set to come out this November.
