Venom's Opening Weekend Beats Out Captain America, Thor, and Ant-Man 2

Venom had just released in theaters last week, and though the movie has been critically panned, it still managed to make a lot of bank in the box office. News has it that it actually had an opening weekend that beat out films like Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and the recent Ant-Man and the Wasp.

This news comes from Variety's Justin Kroll:

Of course, a lot of people were expecting Venom to make money in the box office, counting that he is one of the more recognizable enemies of Spider-Man. But just like Suicide Squad, this money maker was befallen with the worst reviews and may have just marked the death of Sony's attempt at a Spider-Man-less cinematic universe.

Though the movie was critically panned, I still think there are a few choice things to love about Venom. For one, he looks absolutely gorgeous onscreen, and when he moves it's like he keeps shifting from solid to liquid. You also have to love the chemistry between Eddie Brock and the symbiote; by the time the movie ends, it's like Brock has a twisted talking pet that he takes around with him.

If anything, don't expect to enjoy this movie if you take it too seriously. The plot is too childish, and the villain forgettable. Even the symbiote's motivation to help Brock is so paper thin that it legit made me laugh.

Catch Venom in theaters now.
