Venom was absolutely slammed by critics when it came out, but the movie continues to soar in the box office—particularly in China. As it turns out, the movie is doing so well there that they've decided to give it an extended run.
According to Deadline, Venom has made the most money in China compared to anywhere else in the world. The movie is about to pass the haul of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ($261.2 million) and is set to become the seventh highest-grossing movie of the year.
Not even the release of newer blockbusters have been able to shake Venom's position in the box office. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald opened with $37.5 million whereas Venom got $51 million.
Now the next thing to go up against the movie is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse which releases next week; but at this point, it's just Sony going up against itself. If we wanted real competition from a rival studio, we should be looking at Aquaman which is set to come out Dec. 21. Let's also not forget the Transformers spinoff film Bumblebee.
Though a lot of Spider-fans were hoping that Venom would fail in cinemas, it looks like this ridiculous amount of success is going to push Sony forward with their SUMC. A lot of us may have wanted to see Marvel Studios in control, but it looks like we'll have to get ready for movies like Morbius and Kraven the Hunter. Don't forget other female-lead films like Silk and Jackpot (featuring Black Cat).
Venom hits digital Dec. 11.
