The Walking Dead: Robert Kirkman Wishes Tyreese Could Have Lived Longer

Like Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead had gathered an audience based on its unrelenting and unforgiving nature of killing off main characters. We’ve seen several fan-favorites die onscreen and in the comics, and creator Robert Kirkman talks about which character he’s regretted killing off most.

Talking during Walker Stalker Cruise 2018 (via NME), Kirkman admitted:

“I mean, I always loved Tyreese. I miss the character a lot in the comics, and it was great getting to write him again for the show, and you know, I thought he was a cool guy. I liked how gentle he was and how ill-equipped for the world he was and what a struggle it was for him to bash people’s heads in with that hammer.”

In the comics, Tyreese had been killed off by the Governor in an attempt to have Rick open up the prison; Tyreese lasted a lot longer in the show, but it seems that Kirkman was still unsatisfied with how the character played out. He already had to kill off Tyreese twice, and it seems that either time didn’t seem justified.

With Tyreese being one of the more cool-headed members of the group, he was easily one of the most likeable characters in The Walking Dead. Sure I would have loved to see him stay longer, but the show wouldn’t be what it is if it never showed us any real stakes.

For now, the show is gearing up for the death of Carl in the next episode, and it looks like we’re finally getting an all-out war with Negan and the Saviors.

The Walking Dead comes back to AMC Feb. 25.
