The Rise of Skywalker Unseats The Last Jedi as the Longest Star Wars Film

A lot of people are excited about the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and though Lucasfilm has been keeping quiet about the film all year, they are now releasing some details here and there. Just in, it's been revealed that TROS will actually be the longest Star Wars movie after The Last Jedi.

According to AMC Theatres, The Rise of Skywalker will have a runtime of 155 minutes (2 hours, 35 minutes), beating out The Last Jedi which was 152 minutes long. It's only 3 minutes longer, but that could mean everything from an extended fight scene to a drawn-out exposition.

Just in case you're curious, the Star Wars film with the shortest runtime is still Star Wars: A New Hope which runs for 121 minutes.

Seeing that J.J. Abrams plans to make TROS the cohesive end of the entire Skywalker saga, it would make sense that he would take all the time that he needs. Heck, if Peter Jackson was able to expand The Hobbit into three 3-hour films, then Star Wars should be able to take as much time as it needs to tell the complete story.

After the release of The Rise of Skywalker, fans should expect a hiatus of Star Wars films from theaters, but we'll still be getting some live-action films in Disney's streaming service, Disney+. Let's hope The Mandalorian doesn't disappoint.

Catch Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in theaters Dec. 20.
