The Little Mermaid: Harry Styles Has Officially Signed On As Prince Eric

Disney is slowly gathering the cast for their live-action The Little Mermaid film, and news has it that they finally found someone to play Ariel's love interest, Prince Eric.

The DisInsider reports that One Direction's Harry Styles has officially signed on to play Prince Eric opposite Halle Bailey's Ariel. No other new details have been released about Styles' role, but I bet they're going to have him sing for the film. After all, The Little Mermaid does open with Eric and the Fathoms Below song on the ship.

Besides Styles, the film has also cast Awkwafina as Scuttle the Seagull and Jacob Tremblay as Flounder. Rumor has it that Pirates of the Caribbean's Javier Bardem is in talks to play King Triton, and Melissa McCarthy is being courted to play Ursula the Sea Witch.

For now, it looks like The Little Mermaid is still in the early stages of production. It's worth noting that the film will have Rob Marshall at the helm, the same director behind Mary Poppins Returns and Into the Woods. Hopefully, we can get a solid update on the movie (or maybe an announcement of the full cast) come the D23 Expo later this month.

After the success of remakes like The Lion King and Aladdin, there seems to be no stopping of Disney's remake train. I guess they might have a snag when they run out of Disney renaissance movies from the 90s era, but I would actually look forward to a live-action version of action adventures like Treasure Planet and Atlantis: The Lost Empire.

No release date has been set for The Little Mermaid.
