Suicide Squad's Jai Courtney Talks About Jared Leto's Joker

With the new trailer for Joaquin Phoenix's Joker out, a lot of comparisons is going to the previous actor who took on the Clown Prince of Crime, Jared Leto. What's interesting is, Jai Courtney, who played Captain Boomerang in Suicide Squad, talks a bit about working with Leto and kind of confirms his weird attitude on set to get into character.

Talking to Collider, Courtney confirms that he has never met Leto outside of his Joker persona and that he indeed sent weird gifts to everyone on set, and the condoms weren't even the worst of it:

Courtney goes on to confirm that Leto also isolated himself from the rest of the cast, which kind of makes sense since the Joker was more of his own thing in the film. With James Gunn set to do a soft reboot of Suicide Squad with his sequel, I kind of wish he was able to salvage something from Leto's Joker performance. I actually believe there's still a lot of potential there, but the character just wasn't given anything much to do.

As for Phoenix and his onset behavior for Joker, there wasn't really a lot said about him misbehaving as Leto did. If anything, co-star Marc Maron says he wasn't able to establish any kind of rapport with Phoenix since he got really intense when he got into character—and it kind of shows in the trailer.

Hopefully, this will be another win for DC moving forward. After Aquaman, Shazam! was actually a fun romp. Now I'm ready to go dark again with this Joker film.

Catch Joker in theaters Oct. 4.
