Suicide Squad 2: James Gunn is Not Making a ‘Full-Blown’ Reboot

With James Gunn possibly directing the Suicide Squad sequel, rumors have been going around that it's going to be a full-on reboot of the characters—including recasts and whatnot. As it turns out, that isn't necessarily the case for the movie.

As per reliable insider @DanielRPK on Twitter:

I asked about it and was told "Think more like G.I. Joe: Retaliation than a full-blown reboot." So It'll be set in the same world, it'll have some of the same actors but it'll feel [fresh] and new.

If you haven't seen, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, it basically re-did the entire roster of the team while at the same time bringing in some familiar faces from the first movie. I guess Gunn might be doing the same with Suicide Squad 2, redoing the whole of Task Force X, but at the same time keeping some elements that worked from the first film.

Though Suicide Squad was a critical bomb, a lot of fans agree that there are a lot of salvageable things from the film. Besides the gorgeous aesthetics brought to screen by David Ayer, there's also the wonderful casting we have with Will Smith (Deadshot) and Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn). I was even impressed with how crazy Jai Courtney looked as Captain Boomerang.

One gripe that a lot of people have, though, is that of Jared Leto's Joker. Personally, I just think that his character wasn't given enough time to shine. With Gunn great at writing character arcs in Guardians, I bet he may have something great in store should he choose to tackle the Joker.

Then again, maybe they should just save Mr. J for a Batman solo movie.

No release date has been set for the Suicide Squad sequel.
