Star Wars: Could the Knives Out Sequel Delay Rian Johnson's Trilogy?

After Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker basically fumbled upon release, a lot of fans—specifically those who loved The Last Jedi—are looking to Rian Johnson to come back and give us a franchise entry that isn't just shameful fanservice. Lucasfilm has hired him to make an entire trilogy of films, but it's possible that we could be looking at a delay.

A recent report has revealed that Johnson will be working on a sequel to his 2019 hit Knives Out, and Johnson himself has said that he wants the movie to be ‘made quickly' with a production start aiming for next year. We don't know what the status of his trilogy is now, but this could lead to a significant delay.

Of course, this is all just speculation on my part. We know that Johnson won't be in charge of the Star Wars movie coming out in 2022, and until Lucasfilm makes an official announcement, we have no idea when they plan to push Johnson's trilogy.

While I was confident that Lucasfilm was proud of what Johnson had brought with The Last Jedi, the ret-conning of The Rise of Skywalker kind of makes me believe that it's possible that he Johnson's trilogy could have been dropped. As a fan who will defend The Last Jedi's quality to my dying breath, I just think it's a shame if Disney decides to keep pushing Star Wars into this fan-pleasing franchise rather than something more meaningful and daring.

No release date has been set for Johnson's Star Wars trilogy, but you can catch The Rise of Skywalker now in theaters.
