Fans are currently awaiting the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi near the end of the year, but they are also keeping in mind Colin Trevorrow’s Star Wars Episode IX which will cap off the sequel trilogy in 2019. It looks like pre-production of the movie is going on smoothly and the heads as Lucasfilm will be having a script reading for Trevorrow’s script soon.

Talking to E-Cartela (via Star Wars News Net), Lucasfilm director Kathleen Kennedy said:

“To be honest, we are beginning to talk about [the spinoffs] right now. We have four or five weeks immersed in the film Han Solo and we are about to read the script of Colin Trevorrow’s Episode IX directed, so we have a lot of work at the moment. In the next six or eight months we will have some meetings about the stories that we will develop here. After 40 years of adventures, fans have so much information and so many theories about the way that can take these stories and theories that emerge are sometimes new ideas for us that we hear, read and pay attention to everything what is said. It is clear that the franchise is owned by the as much by the fans as it’s owned by [the people at Lucasfilm].”

Kennedy had recently said that there could be an announcement of the next spin-off film this summer, so fans had better keep their eyes peeled for that. Everyone’s best guess is either the movie is the Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone film or possibly the Boba Fett ensemble movie which will include a handful of other bounty hunters — then again, Lucasfilm could totally surprise us with something different.

Personally, I may not be too keen on Trevorrow’s track record as a director, but seeing as Lucasfilm made the perfect choice to have Godzilla’s Gareth Edwards helm Rogue One, I’m just going to have to trust that Kennedy and her people know what they’re doing.

Star Wars Episode IX is still due May 2019, but Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters Dec. 15 this year.
