Matt Smith To Play Young Palpatine In Star Wars: Episode IX?

It's been known for a while that Doctor Who's Matt Smith had been cast in Star Wars Episode IX, but we still have no idea who he's playing. It's said that he's going to be playing a ‘key role' in the movie, and a rumor has come out that he's going to be a young version of Emperor Palpatine.

As per Mr. Sunday Movies of the Weekly Planet Podcast, someone close to the production has leaked that Smith is actually playing a young version of the Sith Lord. It's worth noting that even the source says to take the news with a grain of salt, but Mr. Sunday has always been known to be a reliable source. Plus, it helps that this isn't another crazy theory from Mike Zeroh.

Though I do love character callbacks, I'm generally hoping that Smith is playing an all-new character on his own. With The Last Jedi splitting the fandom in two, I'm part of the fans who actually enjoyed the breaking of the traditional formula. I don't need the movie to give us Snoke's backstory or reveal that Rey was actually a Kenobi. I thought Rian Johnson handled the character arcs perfectly.

For now, we still have no solid updates for the film, but I'm guessing we're going to get our first teaser come Star Wars Celebration next year. Teasers are usually released six months before a film's release, so with the December slate, we could be looking at our first preview sometime in June.

Hopefully, it's earlier than that.

Star Wars: Episode IX is slated to come out Dec. 20, 2019.
