Robert Pattinson on Playing Batman: I Don't Want to Play Someone Who's Heroic

One of the biggest criticisms of Ben Affleck's Batman was that he killed people, which is against one of the main rules of Batman. We don't know much about Robert Pattinson's take on the Caped Crusader yet, but we shouldn't expect him to be any more noble.

Talking to Jennifer Lopez on Actors on Actors, Pattinson explained that his Batman won't be a typical hero. He says, "It's different as well, I have no interest whatsoever in playing someone who's heroic. The only time I want to play someone who the audience knows they're supposed to like is really when they shouldn't like them. That's the only time."

If that's the case, then we could be in for one more controversial Batman portrayal. One thing I was bummed about Affleck leaving is that we're going to lose the gruff and tough Batman that we've met in Batman v Superman, but with Pattinson's comments, it kind of sounds like they're going to stay faithful to that portrayal of the character.

Then again, I could be reading too much into this. I'm sure DC would want a kid-marketable Batman that could sell toys, but if Joker is able to make a billion at the box office, then maybe they're going to go ahead and have more faith in darker films moving forward. After all, if a movie is good and the character is popular, you can bet people will be coming to the cinema. Too bad Blade Runner 2049 and Doctor Sleep can't say the same.

The Batman is set to hit theaters June 25, 2021.
