Pennyworth: Thomas Wayne Cast for Batman Prequel Series

Gotham may be nearing the end of its run, but showrunner Bruno Heller has another Batman spinoff lined up for him called Pennyworth. The series will focus on a young Alfred before he was the manservant of the Waynes, and now the show has found Alfred's boss.

According to Deadline, Ben Aldrige (Fleabag) has been cast as the young billionaire Thomas Wayne. He'll be playing opposite of Jack Bannon, who has been cast as a young Alfred Pennyworth. It's said that the show will have Alfred trying to put his SAS soldier days behind him by starting a security company, and he'll end up being hired by Wayne.

Thomas Wayne is described as, "a young, fresh-faced billionaire hailing from the East Coast of the United States. Confident and extremely disciplined, this young aristocrat meets an unlikely business partner in Alfred Pennyworth."

Pennyworth is set to be a period piece, and it will take place in 1960s London. It will also run for 10 episodes, each running for an hour.

I'll be honest, Gotham was already a stretch having a show focusing on Batman characters without Batman, but an entire series based on his butler will take a lot more to be interesting. Besides ageless villains like Ra's Al Ghul and Vandal Savage, I can't think of any more villains that would make sense to clash along with Alfred. If anything, they could have just made this about a different character entirely.

Then again, if Epix really wants to make this show, they must have something worthwhile in their hands. I guess we'll just have to wait and see until Pennyworth airs.

No release date has been set for Pennyworth.
