Paramount was Aware Fans Would Hate First Look of Sonic the Hedgehog

While Sonic the Hedgehog may look amazing now, everyone can't forget the first look we got at the character from the first teaser. As it turns out, Paramount Pictures knew that fans were going to hate the look of Sonic, but they decided to push forward anyway.

Talking to fan site Sonic Team Argentina (via Tails' Channel), animator Max Schneider had revealed that Paramount was aware that the fans would hate the original look of movie Sonic; they were, however, banking on the general audience being fine with it.

Apparently, they decided to go with their gut, based on their experience with the TMNT franchise, where fans hated the look of the Turtles but ended up liking the design once the movie came out. Too bad for them though, because nobody liked the look of Sonic, and thus they had to confer with SEGA and agree to delay the film in order to give time for artists to fix the design.

If anything, it looks like a good move on Paramount's part to change Sonic the Hedgehog. A lot of people are loving the new design, and some are even promising to watch the film as a "reward" for Paramount listening to fan concerns. It's also worth noting that they were able to make this change without abusing any of the artists. It was said there was no crunch time involved, and the animators were able to work on their usual pace.
