Original Robocop Writer Gives Update on Neill Blomkamp's Reboot

The Robocop reboot back in 2014 did not perform as expected, and the franchise is set to make a reboot/sequel of the original this time around. District 9's Neill Blomkamp has been tapped to direct the film, and now we have an update for Robocop Returns.

Original Robocop writer Ed Neumeier tells HN Entertainment:

"Neill Blomkamp and his screenwriter Justin Rhodes have done a pass on the script we were writing on and they're doing another one. It is a slightly different concept in some ways than we were originally doing. I don't want to talk too much about it…but we're hopeful and I think Neill really really wants to make a good RoboCop movie. His idea is that it should be the proper Verhoeven, if Verhoeven had directed a movie right after RoboCop. I think that's what he is trying to achieve and I hope he does. We'll see what happens next."

We don't really know what to expect of this movie yet, but it's said to be building on a script that was supposed to be the original Robocop sequel. Peter Weller is expected to reprise his role as Alex Murphy, but so far we have no confirmation on his return.

Though Blomkamp does get a lot of praise for District 9, a lot of people admit that his projects that have come afterward have been lackluster. Elysium and Chappie didn't end up being huge hits, but Blomkamp does have an interesting feel when it comes to his movies—a feel that would be great for a Robocop sequel.

No release date has been set for Robocop Returns.
