Nickelodeon is Making Figures Based on Spongebob Memes

Spongebob Squarepants is one of the longest running shows on Nickelodeon, and if you're a kid who grew up in the 90s/early 2000s, chances are you're familiar with the guy who lives in a pineapple under the sea. Spongebob is also deeply woven into meme culture, and it looks like Nickelodeon has noticed.

According to Kotaku, Nick is actually releasing some official toys based off of Spongebob memes like Handsome Squidward and Surprised Patrick. The first wave will come with six figures, and each of them runs for $22 on Amazon. It's admittedly pricey for toys that don't really move, but I'm sure a lot of fans would like to grab these things up for their office desks or personal collections.

The figures coming out are based on the memes Handsome Squidward (with open and closed eyes), Imagination, Mocking Spongebob, Surprised Patrick, and Primitive Spongebob. These few only scrape the top of the Spongebob meme iceberg, but I bet Nickelodeon is ready to make more of this series should this first wave be a success.

Personally, I've felt that SpongebobSquarepants has actually lost some of the humor that made the earlier episodes so fun, but maybe that's just nostalgia talking. I'm sure there are some kids who look at the new episodes and think the same thing we did when we watched the earlier seasons of the show. Give it a couple of years, and Nick will be making merch out of those memes as well.
