Netflix’s Live-Action Avatar: The Last Airbender Aiming for Early 2020 Production Start

Everyone was excited to hear that Netflix will have another go at making a live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender, and this time they brought in original show creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino. We haven't gotten any relevant updates on the show for a while, but news has it that the series is aiming to start shooting very early next year.

This was revealed by Toph voice actress Jessie Flower who told the Wyrd Crafts Chit-Chat Podcast, "I'm pretty sure it's going to all be done up in Canada. [Showrunners Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino] are going to start filming I think in February. That's rough but sometime in early 2020 they will get the ball rolling."

Netflix has yet to give us any other looks at the series, but seeing as how the first live-action attempt at Avatar was absolutely hated by fans, they should be trying their best to do this show right. If anything, a lot of fans still haven't forgiven Netflix for their anime to live-action adaptations—specifically what they did with Death Note.

Hopefully, DiMartino and Konietzko find a way to adapt the Last Airbender for live-action. I'm sure they'll have to cut some storylines and threads, but I think it's important they get the characters and the action right. I just pray that Netflix also gave them a modest enough budget to pull it off. I imagine live-action bending is going to cost a lot.

No release date has been set for Netflix's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender.
