Mulan Star Allegedly Forced by China to Support HK Police

Disney's live-action Mulan movie caught quite the snag when lead star Liu Yifei was bashed for showing her support to the police during the protests in Hong Kong. There were suddenly calls to boycott the film online, but now a rumor has dropped that Liu was actually forced to make those comments.

This comes from The DisInsider's Skyler Shuler:

The idea that the Chinese government had actually forced Liu to show her support for the police actually makes sense, seeing as how they are notorious for censorship. Heck, Blizzard had the same issue when they were criticized for trying to appease Chin by revoking the winnings of a player who supported the HK protests.

Then again, it's also possible that Disney is trying to do some damage control since Mulan has been at the butt of bad press for a while. Besides Liu's comments, it's also been said that the movie has not been doing well with test audiences and it is undergoing very extensive reshoots to fix the third act.

For now, it's really tricky on what information to trust. At this point, we don't even know where Liu officially stands. Was her support genuine, or was she just forced to make her statement? I guess we'll just have to wait and see when the truth comes out.

When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father.

Catch Mulan when it hits theaters May 25, 2020.
