Live-Action Masters of the Universe Coming Straight to Netflix

A Masters of the Universe movie had been in development hell for a while, and news had come out last month that the project had been postponed indefinitely. The good news is, things seem to be underway, and it's thanks to streaming giant Netflix.

According to DiscussingFilm, Sony's live-action Masters of the Universe film will now be developed and distributed by Netflix, and the film is aiming for a late 2021/early 2022 release.

This is probably the third Masters of the Universe project that's coming to the platform. Besides She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, we're also getting an animated Masters of the Universe with showrunner Kevin Smith. It's said that the animated show will also serve as a direct sequel to the original series from the 80s.

I have to say, Netflix has really put the industry over its head with its film releases. Unlike the traditional theatrical release, putting up a movie on Netflix is significantly cheaper, plus it can draw in a large audience thanks to subscribers. No wonder Disney wanted to have its own medium with Disney+ since it allows for riskier projects like The Mandalorian.

Personally, I don't know how hard people are clamoring for a Masters of the Universe show, but the property has a lot of potentials to be picked up by a new generation of fans. Hopefully, Netflix knows the proper way to take the franchise's direction. Maybe it would help if they synergize the release of the show and the live-action film? I mean, if Star Wars can do it, so can they.

No official release date has been announced for the Masters of the Universe movie.
