James Gunn was Given the Choice to Direct Superman Before Choosing The Suicide Squad

Marvel fans were shocked when James Gunn was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and if it had not happened, he wouldn't have signed on with DC to do The Suicide Squad. What's interesting is, they actually gave Gunn the option to direct one of their biggest properties—Superman.

Talking to Empire, Gunn reveals that he was made to choose between directing Superman and Suicide Squad. Gunn shares that he had told Marvel head Kevin Feige that he was signed on to direct a DC movie, to which Feige asked, "Is it Superman?" While Gunn didn't reveal the exact exchange with Feige, he did say that Superman ‘was a possibility,' before he ultimately chose to do Suicide Squad.

It would be interesting to think that Gunn was given the option to do Superman, seeing as he did a horror parody of Man of Steel when he produced Brightburn. We don't know what that movie would have looked like, but I'm kind of thankful that he chose to do Suicide Squad, because Gunn has a knack for more irreverent characters—something that Superman isn't allowed to be.

We don't know what's in store for Superman's future, but Henry Cavill is still pretty much onboard. While some would love to have Zack Snyder come back, I think after the whole kerfuffle with WB, someone else should take on the reins and give Clark Kent a ‘soft reboot.'

In the meantime, you can catch Superman again in Zack Snyder's Justice League which comes to HBO Max sometime in 2021. Gunn's The Suicide Squad hits theaters on Aug. 6, 2021.
