James Gunn Says He Had a Lot of Fun Writing The Suicide Squad

While everyone is excited to have James Gunn come back for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, he's set to start work on The Suicide Squad for the DCEU first. He was hired by WB right after he got fired by Disney, but as it turns out, that didn't really affect his work on the script.

Talking to Deadline, Gunn reveals that he actually enjoyed writing his soft reboot of Suicide Squad. He explains, "The Suicide Squad, it just instantly started flowing. I don't think I've had as much fun writing a script since maybe Dawn of the Dead. That's what this whole movie has been like."

We don't know what really made Gunn have fun with the script, but I'm going to take a guess that he has a lot more freedom here as compared to the Guardians films. With Guardians, Gunn had always tried to keep things family friendly and PG, but with rumors coming out that The Suicide Squad could be R-Rated, he may have been allowed to go all out this time around.

If you want to know what an R-Rated superhero movie from Gunn would look like, I suggest you check out Super from 2010, starring Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page:

For now, Gunn is as busy as ever. He's currently prepping production for The Suicide Squad which is set to begin later this year, and afterwards, he's off to work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 which is starting production next year. I'm just hoping Gunn has enough time to relax between both films because I would hate it if one or the other ends up rushed because Gunn would be so busy.

No release date has been set for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but The Suicide Squad is aiming for a release Aug. 6, 2021.
