J.J. Abrams: Star Wars’ George Lucas Loves His Midi-Chlorians

Despite not selling Star Wars to Disney a few years ago, George Lucas is still pretty much involved when it comes to the making of the new films, and everyone is always asking for his thoughts and opinions on ongoing projects. What's funny is, The Rise of Skywalker J.J. Abrams met with Lucas and says he had a fun time talking about Midi-chlorians.

Talking to Total Film, Abrams explains, "[George Lucas] had a lot of things to say about the nature of the Force, the themes that he was dealing with when he was writing the movies… Yes, there were some conversations about Midi-chlorians – he loves his Midi-chlorians. But it was a very helpful thing. Sitting with him is a treat, just to hear him talk because it's fucking George Lucas talking about Star Wars. I always feel it's a gift to hear him talk about that stuff. Because the effect that he had on me at 10 years old is utterly profound."

Abrams didn't really go in-depth about how Lucas' insights on the Force helped with TROS, but I bet we'll just have to see it when the film comes out in December.

Back when the Prequel Trilogy first came out, a lot of fans had hated the concept of Midi-chlorians because it removed the element of mystique that the Force had since the Original Trilogy. Since then, the expanded universe has been able to spin it so that scanning for Midi-chlorians were a sign that the Jedi were losing their spiritual connection to the Force and relying too heavily on the scientific elements. By the time The Last Jedi came around, Luke Skywalker was criticizing the Jedi for supposedly taking ownership of the Force.

We don't know what to expect with this next film, but since it's going to be closing the story arc of nine movies, I bet we're going to get some huge Force revelations.

Catch Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in theaters Dec. 20.
