It was Steven Spielberg's Idea to Make a Bumblebee Spinoff

Bumblebee is one of the blockbuster films headed to cinemas this month, and it will also mark the first live-action Transformers film not to be directed by Michael Bay. As it turns out, the idea to have the movie made was from producer Steven Spielberg all along.

Talking to Yahoo Movies UK, director Travis Knight explains:

"The original idea for this film actually was Steven Spielberg's. We can thank him for this film even existing. At heart of it [Bumblebee] is a film about relationships, and this beautiful love story between these two characters."

With the Bay films continuously panned for being over-the-top, Bumblebee looks to simplify everything—from the action to the character design. We have a max of four robots in the main story, and the movie has also opted to embrace the looks of the robots from the G1 era of Transformers.

People who've seen the film have already been singing Bumblebee its praises, mostly because they go in a very different direction from the Bay movies. With Aquaman and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse expected to dominate cinemas this month, I'm curious to know just how Bumblebee will stand once it comes out.

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee the Autobot seeks refuge in a junkyard in a small California beach town. Charlie, on the brink of turning 18 years old and trying to find her place in the world, soon discovers the battle-scarred and broken Bumblebee. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns that this is no ordinary yellow Volkswagen.

Catch Bumblebee in cinemas Dec. 21.
