HBO's Last of Us Series Will Cover Unused Concepts from Original Game

After his great work on Chernobyl, showrunner Craig Mazin is once again teaming up with HBO to bring us an adaptation of Naughty Dog's hit game, The Last of Us. While a series is going to have more time to explore elements of the game compared to a film, Mazin has confirmed that some new elements will be added that were originally included in TLOU.

Talking to BBC Radio 5 Live (via Den of Geek), Mazin has shared that the series will be using some concepts from the original Last of Us that didn't make it into the final game. He explains:

"[Original game director Neil Druckmann], at one point, he's like, ‘You know, there was one thing we were talking about for a while,' and then he told me what it was. I was like, ‘Well, that's going in. You couldn't stop me from doing that.' So we're doing that… And there's quite a few things like that where it's not like, ‘Oh, we just decided, oh, wouldn't it be cool if there was one episode where Joel and Ellie get on motorcycles and confront a motorcycle gang?' That's not what we do. There's no episodic nonsense here. This is all pretty much curated. The things that are new and enhancing of the storyline we're doing are connected in organic, serious ways that fans and newcomers alike will appreciate."

We don't know exactly what these dropped concepts were, but seeing as they were part of the original scheme, I would expect them to feel more organic to the story of Joel and Ellie. Maybe we'll get to see more of Joel's ‘villainous' days during the early years of the outbreak. Maybe there were already plans to set-up Abby from The Last of Us Part II.

If anything, the story of The Last of Us is actually you're typical zombie survival tale, but it's the immersion that the game brings that really sets it apart from the genre. We don't know what to expect of the show, but with Mazin's great work on Chernobyl and involvement of Neil Druckmann, I'm sure HBO has another hit on their hands.

No release date has been set for HBO's The Last of Us, but you can catch Part I and II now available for PS4.
