Ghostbusters 2016 was a huge bomb for Sony, but they’re looking to make it up to the fans by making a straight up sequel to Ghostbusters 2, and they’ve hired Jason Reitman, the son of original director Ivan Reitman, to helm the film. The movie is set to come out next year, and now we have an update on when production will start.
According to The GWW, production for Ghostbusters 2020 will start July 14 at Calgary Canada. So far, the movie has cast the likes of Carrie Coon (The Leftovers), McKenna Grace (Gifted), and Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things). With the movie said to focus on a younger generation of busters, my guess is that Grace and Wolfard will be playing siblings with Coon playing their mother. With the film set to start in July, we should get a complete cast before June ends.
We don’t have a full story for the film yet, but I have a feeling they’re going to making use of some story elements from Max Landis’ Ghostbusters 3 pitch. He had posted it up online for everyone to read years ago, but it has since been taken down—that’s why I have a feeling it could be involved with the movie somehow.
Landis’ pitch was actually pretty great, but it focused on an adult generation of Ghostbusters as compared to really young kids the age of Wolfard and Grace. I can’t explain all of it here, but I can say it was better than what Ghostbusters 2016 ended up being.
Catch Ghostbusters 3 in theaters July 10, 2020.
