Game of Thrones Prequel Starring Naomi Watts Shut Down by HBO

It's no mystery that Game of Thrones was a massive success, and the network wanted to spinoff the show immediately after the finale. One spinoff was said to be a prequel set hundreds of years before the events of the original series, and while we were getting small updates here and there, HBO has apparently turned down the pilot.

According to Deadline, the network has dropped the show written by Jane Goldman; Goldman is apparently e-mailing the cast and crew that the pilot wasn't picked up. We don't have a reason as to why, and even HBO has not made an official statement about the cancellation. While the cash grab was kind of obvious, I was kind of looking forward to delving into the lore of Westeros, even giving us a look at the Lannisters before there were Lannisters.

If anything, there are still several other spinoffs that look to be planned. George R.R. Martin had revealed that he was working on a spinoff that would center on the Targaryens and their conquest of Westeros, but we haven't gotten any recent updates.

If you ask me, I'd prefer a show with more political intrigue and drama rather than the spectacle of dragons and white walkers. I mean, I thought the drama was what made the show awesome in the earlier seasons, and it's the focus on these spectacles are what kind of dumbed down the final episodes. That's just my opinion anyway.

We don't know how many more of these spinoffs are planned, but for now, it looks like we won't be coming back to Westeros anytime soon.
