Game of Thrones Prequel Series to Feature Casterly Rock, But No Lannisters… Yet

It's just been confirmed that House Stark will be featured in the Game of Thrones prequel, but everyone else is curious about the other great houses that will be making a comeback. As it turns out, we shouldn't be expecting any Lannisters yet, but we will be coming to their home of Casterly Rock.

Talking to EW, George R.R. Martin confirmed, "The Lannisters aren't there yet, but Casterly Rock is certainly there; it's like the Rock of Gibraltar… It's actually occupied by the Casterlys — for whom it's still named after in the time of Game of Thrones."

There's actually a pretty neat story of how the Lannisters ended up taking Casterly Rock from the Casterlys. It was said that it all boiled down to a trickster called Lann the Clever. The story of how Lann got the castle is still a legend in the Game of Thrones lore, but I have a feeling that this show will give us the real story.

As for the other houses, we don't really know what to expect. There are a lot of interesting stories about how the Baratheons, Boltons, and Tyrells started, and maybe this show will set all of them up by the end. I'm just hoping for more of the political intrigue that made Game of Thrones the show that it was. When it came down to it, it seemed that the final seasons were more interested in CGI spectacles rather than proper character development—which was a real bummer.

We don't know when this prequel is set to come out, but hopefully we get a release date come SDCC 2019 later this month.
