Game of Thrones 8: Maisie Williams Responds to 'Forgesex' Haters

A lot of Game of Thrones fans were caught completely by surprise by the latest episode of the show with Arya and Gendry consummating a romance, and there has been a lot of hate going toward what the internet has dubbed "Forgesex." While people like Sophie Turner showed her full support for the scene, Maisie Williams has responded to the haters and people who have been complaining about the scene online.

She posts:

When it came to shooting the scene, the showrunners were said to have given Williams as much freedom as they could when they shot it. Seeing that sex was something Arya never really explored in the show, it was definitely a big step for Williams to finally shoot something like this. Talking to EW, Williams explained:

"David and [co-creator Dan Weiss] were like: 'You can show as much or as little as you want…. So I kept myself pretty private. I don't think it's important for Arya to flash. This beat isn't really about that."

It was really interesting because it's a very human relationship for Arya… This is something she's stayed away from, an emotion we've never really seen her engage with. David and Dan were like, ‘It's the end of the world, what else would you have her do?' This may be is a moment where Arya accepts death tomorrow, which she never does — ‘Not Today.' So it was that moment where she says, ‘We're probably going to die tomorrow, I want to know what this feels like before that happens.' It's interesting to see Arya be a bit more human, speak more normally about things people are scared of."

When it comes to the hate, I imagine the feelings that some fans have toward the scene are akin to that of a parent watching their child have sex for the first time. I mean, we did start watching Arya when she was just a small girl, and it's definitely a big step for us when we see her doing something more adult.

Funny thing is, fans are repulsed by a sex scene between a grown-up Arya and Gendry, but are completely fine watching her kill people, wear their faces as masks, and even put them into pies for other people to eat. Sure, sex was where people drew the line.
