Disney+’s Obi-Wan Series Aiming to Start Shooting Next July

While a lot of people are excited for the release of The Mandalorian on Disney+, a lot of fans are setting their sights for the return of Ewan McGregor in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series. We know that the project has been in development for a while, but now we have an idea on when the show will start shooting.

Talking to Discussing Film, series writer Hossein Amini reveals that Kenobi is aiming for a production start on July 2020. Amini says, "I can't say very much. The plan is to start shooting in July, Ewan McGregor is signed on."

He then repeats a lot of the details we already know like the show taking place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope as well as Obi-Wan dealing with the loss of the Jedi. Amini goes on to explain, "It felt like a really exciting opportunity to explore a different side of a franchise that I always loved and I've always loved it because of its spiritual aspects as well as its fun and action elements, it seems to work on way more than one level which isn't always true for those big franchises."

Personally I would have preferred watching this property as a film, but the emergence of Disney+ has allowed for Lucasfilm to try more experimental projects with the least amount of risk. Though I do love the anthology movies like Rogue One and Solo, they have been BTS nightmares, and I can imagine Lucasfilm doesn't want to go through those same problems again moving forward.

We have yet to get a release date for Kenobi, but hopefully the show will come out in 2021. The Mandalorian debuts on Nov. 12 on Disney+.
