Disney Pixar Announces Next Film, Luca

After Coco, Onward, and Toy Story 4, Disney Pixar is set to release their take on the afterlife with Soul. What's interesting is, they've just announced their next movie, Luca.

Here's the first look:

This is the full synopsis:

Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, the story follows Luca experiencing an unforgettable summer with his new best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret...he is a sea monster from another world.

With Mexican culture being explored with Coco, a lot of people are convinced that this will be heavily influenced by Italian culture this time around. Rumor also has it that this will be the first LGBTQ Pixar film, but we'll just have to wait and see if that's actually true.

Based on just the one photo, a lot of people are making comparisons to Studio Ghibli film Ponyo. The color pallete is very much the same with that film, and Ponyo also deals with humans making friends with magical sea creatures. With Ponyo being kind of abstract with its delivery though, I'm thinking something as mainstream as a Pixar film would be more direct.

I have to admit, Coco was probably the last Pixar movie that I thought was pretty solid, and even then that film still had problems. I thought Toy Story 4 was more of an epilogue with Onward falling kind of short character-wise. Hopefully Luca manages to capture that same magic. Then again, it could be just me.

Luca is set to release in the summer of 2021. Disney Pixar's next film, Soul, is set to come out on Nov. 20.
