Disney CEO Admits Solo's Underperformance was His Mistake, Talks the Future of Star Wars

Though Solo: A Star Wars Story is not bad by any means, it's no mystery that the film underperformed in the box office—unusual counting that it's a Star Wars movie. In a recent interview, Disney CEO Bob Iger admits that Solo's box office numbers were his fault, and says that they are currently working out a way to best release SW films in the future.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Iger admits:

"I made the timing decision, and as I look back, I think the mistake that I made — I take the blame — was a little too much, too fast. You can expect some slowdown, but that doesn't mean we're not gonna make films. J.J. [Abrams] is busy making [Episode] IX. We have creative entities, including [Game of Thrones creators David] Benioff and [D.B.] Weiss, who are developing sagas of their own, which we haven't been specific about. And we are just at the point where we're gonna start making decisions about what comes next after J.J.'s. But I think we're gonna be a little bit more careful about volume and timing. And the buck stops here on that."

It was said that when original Solo directors Lord and Miller were fired, Lucasfilm had asked to delay the release date to December of this year, but having enough delays with their films, Disney decided to put their foot down and gave Lucasfilm the money they needed with the condition that the movie comes out in May.

Rumor also had it that it was Disney's decision to go easy on marketing for Solo since they were focused on getting everyone excited for Avengers: Infinity War. At best, Solo only had two months to get everyone pumped to see it, and the marketing push was nowhere near The Last Jedi or even Rogue One.

At least for now, Star Wars fans can rest easy knowing that there will still be a steady stream of content coming. After Solo, numerous rumors were coming out that Disney had decided to pull the plug on all active projects for Lucasfilm. At best, Lucasfilm is going to be working on one project at a time per medium; Star Wars Episode IX for films, Star Wars Resistance for animated shows, and Jon Favreau's series for live-action.

Star Wars Episode IX is slated for a release on Dec. 20, 2019.
