Disney Allegedly Can’t Agree on an Indiana Jones 5 Script

Besides Star Wars, there have been attempts to reinvigorate the Indiana Jones franchise with Harrison Ford. Though Steven Spielberg was originally set to direct the fifth movie, the legendary director has stepped down to let James Mangold (Logan) take over. While we don't know the current status of the film, screenwriter David Koepp reveals that a huge part of the delay is because nobody could agree with the script.

Talking to Den of Geek, David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Spider-Man), had explained:

"I tried a couple different versions with Steven and they all had some good stuff about them and they all had some stuff that didn't work, which happens… But it was just very hard to have everybody come together and have all the elements — Steven, Harrison, the script, and Disney — come together at once. And it didn't."

With the last Indiana Jones film not well-received, you can imagine that there's a lot of care being placed on bringing Indy back to the big screen—especially since this is most likely the last time Harrison Ford will ever play the part.

While Koepp did have trouble coming up with the script, he says that Mangold getting hired was his ticket out of the project. He continues:

"When James Mangold came in and Steven stepped out, that was a pretty logical breaking point… It's a gracious time to step out the door because I think the last thing a new director wants is the old director's writer. I mean, that's a drag. The last thing you need is some guy sitting around with his arms folded saying, ‘Well, the way Steven would have done it is…' I had one nice friendly conversation with him and then I'm sure he wanted to be able to move on anyway. Everybody was pretty polite, I thought."

For now, we don't know what Mangold has in mind for Indiana Jones 5, but it will likely be the proper sendoff that cinema's greatest archeologist deserves. With Mangold being able to give us one of the last great X-Men movies, everyone is excited about what he has in store for Lucasfilm's only other iconic franchise.

Indiana Jones 5 is slated for a release on July 29, 2022.
