Disney+'s Marvel Shows Said to Cost $25M per Episode, Mandalorian Costs $15M

Disney+ is going a whole new direction by bringing live-action Marvel and Star Wars content to their platform, but with the properties moving to TV, a lot of fans are worried about the drop in quality. What's interesting is, Disney is actually dishing out a lot of money for these upcoming shows.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is dishing out a budget of $1 billion for their 2020 content. The Mandalorian is said to be worth $15 million per episode and Marvel shows like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, and Hawkeye are said to be costing $25 million per episode. If each season is worth 6-8 episodes, then that would mean Marvel would be spending something close to $150 million for a whole series—roughly the budget of one standalone MCU film.

We don't know why Disney would opt to just have these films released on their platform rather than in theaters, but I can imagine they want these series to be a major draw for subscribers. What's more, they can be considered very risky projects, so a release on their own platform must save a lot of money when it comes to marketing and distribution.

Personally, I'd prefer if they still kept making Star Wars anthology films for cinemas, but after the risks they took with Rogue One and Solo, it makes sense they would want to minimize risks. Then again, I would have preferred to watch an Obi-Wan film in a theater rather than in my home.

Disney+ is set to launch on Nov. 12.
