The G.I. Joe movie franchise had basically been dead since Retaliation came out in 2013, but Hasbro is set to reboot the franchise with a prequel detailing the origin of ninja Snake Eyes. News has it that Allspark Pictures already has someone in mind for the lead role.

According to The Wrap, Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians) is being eyed to star as the silent ninja in Allspark’s Snake Eyes. Originally, the role was played by Darth Maul actor Ray Park, but seeing that this is a prequel, it would make sense that they would recast the part. With Snake Eyes also made to be an American in the earlier Joe films, having him recast as an Asian actor could be a sign that Hasbro is ready for a full reboot.

Snake Eyes has Red and R.I.P.D. director Robert Schwentke at the helm. He’s also working on a script from screenwriter Evan Spiliotopoulos (Beauty and the Beast).

The story is said to focus on Snake Eyes’ origin as he attempt s to join the Arashikage Clan in Japan. We don’t know if the movie will end with Snake Eyes eventually teaming up with a new incarnation of Joes; but at this point I think it would be best if we would just get a reboot of the franchise and forget what’s come before—just like what they seem to be doing with the Transformers franchise and Bumblebee.

Snake Eyes is set to come out Oct. 16, 2020.
