Celebrate 40 Years of Mobile Suit Gundam with New Short Film G40 Project

2019 was a big year for Sunrise as it marked the 40th anniversary of the popular Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, and the celebration is bleeding on over to 2020. Besides the actual Gundam that is being built for Gundam Factory Yokohama, Sunrise has released a new short film titled G40 Project.

It's kind of a bummer, but the film doesn't really have any story. It's basically just an animation bringing us into the main feel of the original Gundam franchise; a bunch of Zaku invade a space colony, Amuro Ray rides the RX-78-2, then he clashes with the Red Zaku piloted by the Red Comet a.k.a. Char Aznable. The rest of the clip ends with the Gundam taking on several Zaku in different locations—basically what happened in the original Mobile Suit Gundam.

We get an update look at the overall design for all the mech in the short, plus we have some recreated shots from the original anime, complete with music and 80s-era sound effects. I'm almost certain they also used voice clips from the original anime.

With fans just recently celebrating the 40th anniversary of Star Wars, I guess you could say that Gundam is like the Star Wars of Japan. It's a whole lot of sci-fi, but it still has some fantasy elements. Plus, it's a franchise that is loved by people all over the world. Let's hope Sunrise can keep surprising us with some new entries into the world of Mobile Suit Gundam for many more years to come.

The next series in the franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway, is set to come out July 23.
