Captain Marvel EP on the Challenges of Introducing a Gay Hero to the MCU

Though the MCU isn't a shining beacon of representation, the franchise is slowly getting there, what with films like Black Panther and Captain Marvel. We're set to have our first gay lead in The Eternals, and Captain Marvel EP Jonathan Schwartz talks a bit about introducing a homosexual character in the MCU.

Talking to ComicBookMovie, Schwartz explains:

"You know, I think the important thing about finding the MCU's first openly gay superhero is making sure that it's done right in a way that honors the character and feels totally organic. We talked in the past about characters who could potentially be that character because we know how important that representation is to the community and the answer has really been that it has to be the right character and it has to be the right time. We can't take a half measure and we can't mess it up. I think everyone wants it and everyone wants it to be done the right way."

Of course, there have already been small steps when it comes to homosexuality in the MCU. Avengers: Endgame featured the first openly gay character played by Joe Russo (during Captain America's grief counseling scene). I also think it was key that it would be Steve Rogers in the scene; what better way to tell everyone that it's okay to be gay if not from the very personification of America in the MCU?

For now, we only have bits and pieces of info for The Eternals, but the movie definitely has a star-studded cast. Besides Angelina Jolie, we also have the likes of Kumail Nanjiani, Richard Madden, and Don Lee. Keanu Reeves is also said to be in talks.

No release date has been set for The Eternals, but the movie is expected to come out sometime in 2020.
