Avengers Endgame: An Inside Look at How They Turned Mark Ruffalo into Smart Hulk

Avengers: Endgame is now the highest-grossing film of all time, and now Marvel Studios is preparing for the home release of the movie. We're getting all these special features coming out online, and now Marvel Entertainment has given us an inside look on how they made Smart Hulk for the movie.

Check it out:

As the video points out, they actually had to tweak Hulk a bit for this film when they made him smarter, and they made sure that he looked a bit more like Mark Ruffalo this time around as a way to add more humanity to the character. If you look at the 2012 Hulk, he's actually a lot bulkier, and he has his back arched, making him feel more monkey-like. You'll also notice that old Hulk's face is kind of more exaggerated—as compared to Smart Hulk who is actually quite handsome, but his body is a lot smaller.

While some complain that Endgame basically "assassinated" Hulk's character, I thought this was actually a great way to push the character. Throughout the franchise we see Bruce Banner struggling to keep control of the Hulk, and now we see him fully in control and accepting himself—which I think is a great message you can give to the audience.

Who the hell thought that having an uncontrollable rage monster was in any way sustainable?

Avengers: Endgame is still in theaters, but you can catch the movie in digital on July 30 and Blu-Ray/DVD on Aug. 13.
