Animated Kingdom Hearts Series Confirmed for Disney+

Square Enix's Kingdom Hearts series is probably one of the more popular video games right now involving Disney characters, and with Sora's story supposedly wrapped up with the games, news has it that Disney wants to turn the franchise into a series.

As confirmed by Cinema Spot's Emre Kaya, Disney+ has asked Square Enix to develop a 3D-animated Kingdom Hearts series with Unreal Engine. Here's the post:

The DisInsider's Skyler Shuler has also added that Disney is bringing back Disney voice actors to reprise their roles for the series including Tony Anselmo (Donald Duck), Bill Farmer (Goofy), and Jim Cummings (Winnie the Pooh). No word yet if Haley Joel Osment will be reprising the role of Sora.

If you follow the Kingdom Hearts games, you'll know that the story is one hell of a mess, and I don't know how Disney plans to adapt that into a series. While I suppose they can simplify the story to make it more digestible for new audiences, I think it would be a lot more effective to just expand on the story and give us a protagonist outside of the main narrative with Sora; this way, the games remain canon, and we get to have a whole new adventure with some fresh faces.

For now, it looks like the KH series is still in the early stages of development, and for now, Disney is just asking Square to produce a pilot. We don't know if the show will eventually get picked up, but hopefully, we'll have a solid update before the year ends.
