Amazon's First Season of Lord of the Rings to Have 20 Episodes, More Details Revealed

The Lord of the Rings franchise has once again lay dormant after the release of The Hobbit trilogy, but Amazon is planning to bring it back as a TV series. We don't have any official look at the show yet, but some new details have come to light thanks to Tolkien scholar Tom Shippey.

Talking to Tolkien Gessell-Schaft, Shippey reveals, "there's supposed to be 20 episodes for the first season." What's more, he also talks about how the show is set to take place around the Second Age of Middle-Earth history. Shippey continues:

"Amazon has a relatively free hand when it comes to adding something [...] very few details are known about this time span… The Tolkien Estate will insist that the main shape of the Second Age is not altered… Sauron invades Eriador, is forced back by a Númenorean expedition, is returning to Númenor. There he corrupts the Númenoreans and seduces them to break the ban of the Valar. All this, the course of history, must remain the same."

We don't know how faithful this series is going to be to the source material. Despite their critical acclaim, the Lord of the Rings films have actually taken a few liberties of their own for storytelling purposes. The same could even be said for the Hobbit movies.

When it comes to this series, I guess they're going to keep to a strict skeleton of events. The good thing is, there's still a lot of room for creativity and vision.

No release date has been set for Amazon's Lord of the Rings series, but fans are hoping we can get a solid update before 2019 ends.
