Warner Bros. Interactive has revealed key features in upcoming game Batman: Arkham Knight's eye-popping $40 Season Pass. It brings out Batgirl, front and center.
Many players were dismayed by news that the Arkham Knight season pass will be sold for $40 instead of the usual $15-$30 bracket of other games. Video game downloadable content (DLCs) in general have been getting a lot of flack in recent years, with many game developers seemingly focused on selling more and more extra content instead of improving the main game. Warner Bros. in particular has had history of ignoring main game bugs for Batman: Arkham Origins, prioritizing paid DLC content instead.
Warner Bros. Interactive assures fans that the $40 Arkham Knight DLC would give the best bang for our bucks, however, with at least 6 months of new content, a brand-new prequel story with a playable Batgirl set in a new location, new story missions for Batman facing off against legendary super-villains, playable missions and expanded storylines for Batman's other allies, customizable Batmobiles, new challenge maps, and a variety of character skins.
While all this could arguably be exciting, Warner Bros. has kept mum on who exactly this playable Batgirl is. In the current video game timeline, Barbara Gordon is wheelchair-bound and assisting Batman as Oracle, which could mean that younger Batgirl Stephanie Brown will be behind the cowl. Or could the DLC present a Batgirl prequel, which could mean playable Batgirl is Barbara Gordon prior to her crippling in the comic book The Killing Joke?
Depending on reviews and player feedback, I might let the game launch date pass me by all together and wait for a director's/ game of the year edition that compiles all DLCs with the main game. If that means passing up on pre-order freebies like t-shirts and character skins, then so be it.
Batman: Arkham Knight is set to drop on June 23 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
