Band Claims New Final Fantasy XIV Boss Battle Music is Ripping Them Off

During a new boss battle in the latest update of Final Fantasy XIV, a song plays that sounds very similar to Powerman 5000's When Worlds Collide. It didn't take long for the band to notice, and call it "a straight up rip-off."

For those unfamiliar with the band, Powerman 5000 is an American rock group fronted by Rob Zombie's younger brother, Spider One. You've probably heard When Worlds Collide, a song that was released in 2009. If you played Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2, you'd probably heard of it.

Here's the music video from the band's Vevo:

The Final Fantasy XIV music in question can be heard from the second stage of the newly-introduced boss battle with Sephirot (Not Final Fantasy VII's villain, Sephiroth)

Here's Mekkah Dee's video of the boss battle with all other sounds disabled.

It's clear that parts of the Sephirot 2 Theme are very similar to Powerman 5000's hit. Even some YouTube commenters thought that the uploader replaced the game's audio with a remix of the band's tune. It sounds like the FFXIV music was heavily inspired by the song, and Powerman 5000 is not happy about it. Here's what they said on a post they made on their official Facebook page:

Really? Got to say that the level of unimaginative theft that was used in creating this music for #‎finalfantasyXIV is mind blowing! I mean, this is When Worlds Collide! Using something as inspiration is one thing but a straight up rip off is another! Did they really think no one would notice?#‎FFXIV #‎ripoff

Do you think the FF XIV song deserves to be called a rip-off?
