Avengers: Infinity War’s Screenwriters On The Heartbreaking Ending Of The Movie

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War.

There's certainly a lot of death and destruction in Avengers: Infinity War. Fans who've already seen the first installment in Marvel's two-part Avengers movie know that Infinity War not only begins with death and destruction, it also ends up with half of the universe gone.

In the film, the Earth's Mightiest Heroes fail to keep Thanos from getting all six Infinity Stones, and with a snap of his finger at the very end of the film, the Mad Titan wipes out half of the universe's entire population.

Now, speaking in an interview with Buzz Feed, Infinity War writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely explain why the film ended the way it did.

"This is the hero's journey for Thanos," McFeely told the publication. "By the end of the hero's journey, our main character, our protagonist — at least, in this case — gets what he wants."

Knowing that they had to kill off so many characters in the film, Markus says that he and McFeely had "to be fairly calculating and cold" to write Infinity War. However, despite the emotional control, the screenwriter admits that fans reaction over Infinity War's ending caught him by surprise.

"It really seemed to be a gut punch to people in a way that I didn't fully [realize]," Markus said "You know, I don't tear up every time I read it. But to see the characters fully rendered, and to see the actors' faces processing that loss, it's pretty profound."

It must be very different seeing the emotions play out on the big screen. We wonder how much more suffering fans will have to go through in Avengers 4 next year.

Avengers: Infinity War is currently screening in cinemas.
